Sculpting in Clay: Handbuilding Pottery

Discover the expressive possibilities of clay in this hands-on workshop focused on the art of hand building. In this 3 hour session, participants will create a one-of-a-kind ceramic pitcher while learning essential techniques for shaping and refining slabs of clay by hand. Guided step-by-step, you will explore how to build strong, balanced forms while paying close attention to proportion, structure, and surface. The workshop emphasizes thoughtful craftsmanship—focusing on refining edges, shaping elegant curves, and developing a pitcher that is both functional and sculptural. We imagine using your piece to decorate a tablescape, or doubled as gorgeous flower vase. This multi-functional piece will bring joy for years to come. Participants will also be introduced to a variety of surface decorating techniques, personalizing their work. Demonstrations will include carving, slip decorating, and textural techniques that add depth, pattern, and visual interest to the clay surface. This workshop is suitable for beginners and those with clay experience who want to deepen their understanding of hand-built forms. By the end of the session, each participant will have created a unique pitcher and gained practical skills in form development and surface design. Please note: The nature of clay is both slow and meditative. Making a functional pottery piece requires adequate drying time plus 2 firings in our kiln (a high-powered oven), which last almost 24 hours each! Finished pieces will be carefully glazed and fired for you and will be ready for pickup within 4-6 weeks of your workshop date. We also offer optional shipping for an extra fee, for those out of town.
